An amazing sound
Friends,
Last night (Monday) Carl and I had a wonderful
experience. We went to a dinner/concert by Cantatori del
Duomo, a small, gay chorus in Utrecht. Utrecht is about
a 30 minute train ride from Amsterdam and was even more
"golden" than Amsterdam during the Netherlands Golden
Age of painting.
We hadn't really known what to expect, never having been
to a small chorus dinner/concert. Well, the whole
evening was just fabulous! The event was held in an
upscale restaurant that is attached to Utrecht's State
Theater. Since it was a Monday night, there was nothing
going on in the Theater, and the restaurant was only too
glad to have 75 diners! This chorus does this
dinner/concert three times a year, and always sell out.
The chorus served all three courses and performed a
concert. Before the first course, they performed four
songs. Two of the four were related to food: "Restaurant
Casanova and Wokken (wok cooking). One was in English.
But, no matter if we didn't understand Dutch, we still
got the message of the songs, and the sound was truly
amazing.
After the main course, they sang three more pieces,
including one from Rent. Then came dessert, and six more
songs and a truly deserved encore.
The group is about twenty singers, and had an amazing
sound. Diction (as far as we could tell) was great, and
mostly we noticed that everyone sang out and enjoyed
himself. The lady conductor was fabulous. She got her
group to perform beautifully with subtle motions, and
got lots of emotions out of them, just like Bob does.
By the way, Cantatori del Duomo comes from Singers of
the Dom (Cathedral) and the Dom used to be a meeting
place for homosexuals in the 17th century. If you like,
